Comedian Kim Sook’s declaration that 'happiness means a woman's laughter is loud enough for all to hear' was a national sensation in 2016, due to an old-fashioned belief that women should laugh secretly to appear more lady-like. Once the outgoing feminist comedy Nine to Five screening has ended, there will be a talk about the relationship between comedy and women, along with an in-depth discussion on the importance of the ‘Funny Girls’ special exhibition at this year’s BIFAN.

The 1990's, regarded as a new renaissance in Korean film, was the era of planned productions and comedy, and also the era of outstanding female actresses and producers. Producer Shim Jae-myung has worked in the heart of the Korean film industry on numerous titles, including Joint Security Area, Forever The Moment, Architecture and Cart. She is planning to talk about the 1990’s Korean film industry discussing topics such as Korean films, romantic comedies, and actress Choi Jin-sil.

While 'New Queer Cinema' began with the appearance of a 'queer' movie that rejected heteronormativity, at the same time comedy movies such as Go Fish and But I'm a Cheerleader expanded the spectrum of queer cinema. The discussion will center on the important role comedy played in ‘New Queer Cinema’.

Mega Talk | The 20th Anniversary of Memento Mori - Meet Again

Memento Mori’ is one of the most successful and beloved horror series in Korean film. To mark the 20th anniversary of the movie’s opening, a digital remastering of the original will be released. Members of the team who worked on the film will reunite after 20 years to talk about making the movie, and what it has meant to them.

Lecture | The Genealogy of Détournement

The French situational film Can Dialectics Break Bricks? is famous for using the Hong Kong action film Crush as an original text. However, the beginning of Crush leads back to the Korean action film The Right Way. How did the Korean action film The Right Way go to Hong Kong and then to France, only to return as a Korean film? After the screening of Can Dialectics Break Bricks? a lecture will be held by film critic Yoo Un-seong discussing one of the most interesting examples of détournement in Korean film history.

Masterclass

Director Alexandre O. Philippe, who has made a new film that peaks behind the curtain of Ridley Scott’s masterpiece Alien, as well as the unique documentaries 78/52, The Life and Times of Paul the Psychic Octopus and Doc of the Dead, will make himself available to BIFAN attendees to discuss his film history.

Masterclass | A Master of Light & Shadow, KIM Woo-hyung: The D.P. of The Little Drummer Girl

Talk Concert | Future of Humans and Robot
